How to Upload a Site Before Changing DNS

A temporary URL is available on GreenGeeks Managed VPS Hosting upon request. The method described here is not applicable to other GreenGeeks hosting accounts.

If you want to upload site files to Managed VPS Hosting before your DNS has changed over from a previous host, you can connect via FTP to your VPS server IP address. The IP address is in your account welcome email.

The temporary URL to view your site before DNS changes is the server IP address followed by /~ and your account username. So it looks like this: http://192.186.0.0/~ggexample/

As an alternative to using an FTP program to upload files, you can use the cPanel File Manager.

  1. It would be more helpful if you put a link to the video in this post – rather than saying it exists elsewhere.

  2. This does not work. I am a RESELLER and have been trying for two days to access a client’s new account prior to moving from their old service. This does not work, nor does editing my HOSTS file, as suggested here, https://www.greengeeks.com/support/article/how-can-i-test-my-website-before-switching-dns/.

I have combed the docs to no avail. Support Chat was unable to assist me. Your documentation does not help. I have reached out to you on Twitter to no avail. I am a very frustrated CUSTOMER.
