GreenGeeks offers two types of migrations, depending on the source access and the scope of the migration requested.

cPanel Migration

cPanel to cPanel migrations are from another network running the cPanel backend.  

In these scenarios, GreenGeeks can use the cPanel Backup tools to migrate a 1:1 copy of the existing cPanel account, including files, domains, DNS records, email accounts, forwarders, auto-responders, databases, cron jobs, SSL certs & more.

Note that cPanel to cPanel migration requires the cPanel Backup Tool to be available on the source account. Additionally, your GreenGeeks cPanel Username and(or) the Primary Domain will be adjusted to match the original cPanel source account. 

Manual Migration

All migrations, except for 1:1 cPanel migrations, are considered Manual Migrations and may incur a migration fee.

For manual website migrations, the GreenGeeks Migration Team must copy the data via FTP, rsync(SSH), or tar archive, then manually configure the website(s) and(or) email accounts.

For email accounts, GreenGeeks needs the original IMAP server address and the login information for each email account. GreenGeeks will take this information & re-create the email accounts using the same passwords(when possible), then copy all existing email content from the IMAP source server.


Typical Migration Scenarios

cPanel Migration

Required information:  Source server cPanel access URL & cPanel credentials.

For source servers running cPanel/WHM, GreenGeeks can perform a 1:1 Migration of all existing data

  • 1:1 migration includes files, databases, email accounts, SSL certs, DNS records & everything else in cPanel. 
  • Requires the cPanel Backup tool to be available. 

Manual Migration

Non-cPanel control panel

Required information:  Previous provider’s Control Panel URL & login credentials.

Alternative control panels like Plesk, Webmin, DirectAdmin, or hosts with their custom panel like FatCow/iWeb/GoDaddy

  • We can migrate the files via FTP/SSH or Archive.
  • MySQL DBs can typically export from the source Control Panel or PHPMyAdmin interface. 
  • Email Accounts can migrate via IMAP.
    • Email migration requires an IMAP server address and email login credentials for all accounts.
  • Auto-responders, email forwarders, and custom DNS/MX records will not be copied as part of the migration and must be re-configured post-migration. 

No control panel

Required information:  FTP/SFTP/SSH server information & login credentials, or a tar archive of the website’s files & database from the previous provider.

  • We can migrate the files via FTP/SFTP, SSH(rsync), or tar archive.
  • GreenGeeks can upload a PHP MySQL manager, like Adminer, to dump any source databases.
  • Email Accounts can migrate via IMAP.
    • Email migration requires an IMAP server address and email login credentials for all accounts.
  • Auto-responders, email forwarders, and custom DNS/MX records will not be copied as part of the migration and must be re-configured post-migration. 

WordPress [wp-admin access only]

Required information: Administrator-level wp-admin login, with the ability to install new plugins.

  • Without access to the file system, we may be able to use wp-admin to migrate the website.
  • The user account must have the permissions to install new plugins.
  • GreenGeeks can use a backup plugin like Updraft Plus, Duplicator, or All-in-One WP Migration to generate a copy of your site.
  • WordPress.com migrations are more restricted and only include Posts, Pages & Media data; refer to WordPress.com specific details.

Website Builder-Based Sites

Required information:  Site-builder login URL & credentials.

GreenGeeks cannot complete the migrations of all site-builder-based sites, as the website builder platform is part of the source system.

  • Export/Download static HTML site only.
    • A full-function migration is NOT possible. 
      • JavaScript-based functions & contact forms may not work once migrated.
      • The editor function is built-in on the previous hosting provider & cannot be copied.
  • Some site builders provide a built-in limited export function to generate a static HTML copy of the site as it looks right now. 
  • If there is no export option, GreenGeeks can attempt to download a static HTML copy of the site using our tools.
    • Although the site may look the same to the visitors, you won’t be able to make further changes to the site without manually editing the HTML files.
  • See Provider Specific Notes below for specifics.

In this situation, GreenGeeks recommends developing a new site based on WordPress, a universally supported platform. 

The WordPress platform gives you total control over your website data and allows you to avoid vendor lock-in.

After the partial migration, you can develop a new site on a sub-domain with WordPress. Once ready to push the new site live, we can replace the site-builder-based site.

Email-only Migrations

GreenGeeks allows 10GB for email per hosting service; services with more than 10GB of email will need to purge archived messages post-migration.

cPanel to cPanel 

Required information: Source account cPanel login credentials.

cPanel to cPanel email migration includes both full cPanel to cPanel migrations & manual migrations from a cPanel environment. 

  • All email accounts(~/mail/) get copied 1:1.
  • Existing email passwords can be reused(~/etc/).
  • Auto-responders, email forwarders, and custom DNS/MX records will not be copied as part of the migration and must be re-configured post-migration. 

3rd Party Mail Server(MX) – IMAP

Required information:  IMAP server address + username & password for each account.

For IMAP email migrations, GreenGeeks cannot copy the email accounts directly.  

GreenGeeks will re-create the email accounts within your GreenGeeks hosting plan and then sync the contents using the IMAP protocol, one message at a time.

Auto-responders, email forwarders, and custom DNS/MX records will not be copied as part of the migration and must be re-configured post-migration. 

Common IMAP Email Providers

    • GoDaddy
    • Google Apps (Gmail)
    • Outlook365
    • Zoho
    • Yahoo/AOL/Verizon

3rd Party Mail Server(MX) – POP3

Required Information:   Not Supported.

  • The POP3 protocol is NOT SUPPORTED.    
    • Access using the IMAP protocol is necessary for a standalone email migration. 

With a POP3 account, messages get stored in your local email client, not the server, so an email migration may not be necessary as there are several ways to back up the email in your Email Client.  

3rd Party Mail Server(MX) – Exchange

Required information:  IMAP server support enabled, exchange server address + username & password for each account.

  • The Exchange protocol is not supported.
    • Access using the IMAP protocol is necessary for a standalone email migration. 
      • Exchange servers can typically provide IMAP access in addition to the Exchange protocol, but this may need to be Enabled first. 

Common Exchange Providers

  • Outlook365
  • GoDaddy
  • 1&1
  • Dreamhost

Mailing Lists

Required information: cPanel Migration

GreenGeeks supports MailMan-based mailing lists on our hosting plans.

Mailing Lists are only migrated during complete 1:1 cPanel migrations; we cannot copy mailing lists during a partial or manual migration.

cPanel Providers

Example providers: BlueHost, GoDaddy(cPanel), Host Monster, InMotion, Hostinger, A Small Orange, A2 Hosting, and others.

Migration Type: cPanel

Required Information: Source server cPanel access URL & cPanel credentials.

HostGator

Migration Type: cPanel

Required Information:  Source server cPanel access URL & cPanel credentials.

Special Notes: cPanel accounts are limited to 10GB before backups are disabled. 

Source accounts larger than 10GB can still be migrated, either by removing some content to get under the 10GB limit or by reaching out to the HostGator support team to generate the backup for you.

Custom Control Panels

Example providers: FatCow, 1&1, GoDaddy(Linux),  iPage, Pantheon, WP Engine, Vulr, Digital Ocean, AWS, Azure, etc.

Migration Type: Manual Copy

Required Information:    FTP or SSH login details; alternatively provide access the providers control panel where an FTP account can be created.

Special Notes: These providers give FTP access to the files and MySQL access to the database. Email accounts require separate IMAP email migration.

SiteGround

Migration Type: Manual Copy

Required Information:  Account Access Invitation

Login to SiteGround, go to your Client Area, click on your profile icon and select Manage Users.  Click on the Add New User button, and a pop-up window will appear where you can select the collaborator option.

Note: this only works for “Cloud” accounts(legacy accounts are unable to delegate and will need to provide the cPanel login).

WordPress.com

Migration Type: Manual

Required Information:   WordPress.com login credentials.

Special Notes: We can ONLY export Posts, Pages, and media items using WordPress XML export.

It’s impossible to export Themes or Plugins from WordPress.com, and the look & feel of the website needs to be re-configured once the content import is complete.

You can usually find a theme similar to the one you were using on the free WordPress.org repository, but WordPress almost makes some of the WordPress.com themes available via the SVN repository – https://wpcom-themes.svn.automattic.com/

WordPress.org [Self-Hosted WordPress]

GreenGeeks can make a 1:1 copy of self-hosted WordPress sites, using backend FTP access or a WordPress plugin.

Migration Type: Manual

Required Information:  wp-admin login credentials; admin user must have administrator-level access & the ability to install new WordPress plugins.

Special Notes: Only WordPress-related content is moved and does not include any email accounts or files/folders not associated with WordPress.

If you do not have backend FTP access for the migration, GreenGeeks needs a wp-admin account with administrator-level access to install the necessary migration plugin.

Wix

Migration Type: Manual Copy (Site must be downloaded via HTTrack )

Required Information:  None; static copy of the HTML will be generated.

Special notes: Aside from a static HTML copy of the Wix site, you can generate an XML export of the “Blog Posts”.

The XML blog export data can be imported to WordPress, and you can use the “Auto Upload Images” plugin to automatically grab the remote images.  

This will not be a full copy of your Wix site, only the blog content.

GoDaddy (Site Builder)

Migration Type: Manual Copy (Site must be downloaded via HTTrack )

Required Information:  None; static copy of the HTML will be generated.

Special notes: Contact forms will not work post-migration, along with other JS components.

Weebly

Migration Type: Manual Copy (We can export the full site via ZIP )

Required Information: Access to the Weebly panel, or a published version of the site in archive form.

Special notes: Although we can download a copy of the existing site, we cannot move the Weebly backend configuration from one Weebly Partner to another.

Since we cannot copy the backend, if you have a Weebly site with another provider, GreenGeeks can copy the site as it appears now but further edits will not be possible without editing the HTML files manually.

Squarespace

Migration Type: Manual Copy (Site must be downloaded via HTTrack )

Required Information:  Squarespace login(for WP import).

Special notes: We can export much of the content to WordPress via XML. This will not fully reproduce the site but will copy some of their content into a new WP site. See the guide for more info.

Blogger

Migration Type: Manual Copy

Required Information:  Blogger login credentials.

Special Notes: Most content can be imported to WordPress via XML using a special WordPress plugin.   

This process will not fully reproduce the site but will copy some of its content into a new WP site.

When transferring to a new hosting provider, the most important thing for you to do is to test your website before pointing your domain. This will help guarantee a successful migration by ensuring your site is 100% functional before making the switch.

What you will need:

  • Your GreenGeeks service server IP. You can find this by contacting support to confirm the correct IP address you’ll need to use.

Using a Redirection Service for Testing

The instructions in this tutorial involve editing the hosts file on your local computer. As an alternative, you can use a redirection service that creates a proxy connection to the new server, like SkipDNS.

One of the advantages of using such a service is you can share the proxy URL with a client or a team, so they can view the website on the new server without editing the hosts file on their computer.

If you don’t need to share updates with others, you may find that editing the hosts file is quicker and easier than using a proxy.

Redirecting via System hosts File

The examples here use the Windows operating system. For Linux and macOS instructions, scroll down to the “Linux and macOS users” section.

The best way to test your website is by staging your domain via your computer system’s hosts file. This method avoids having to wait for DNS propagation which could take quite a while.

However, this will only work for the local system. If someone else would like to test the site, they will need to follow the same steps for modifying the hosts file.

Open your text editor of choice. If you’re a Windows user, use Notepad with administrative privileges to modify the hosts file.

  • Open Windows menu (click Windows icon or use Windows keyboard key)
  • Type “Notepad”
  • Right-click “Notepad”
  • From the pop-up menu, select “Run as Administrator”

Open your system’s hosts file. The location of the file is:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

If you don’t see anything in the etc folder, change “Text Documents” to “All Files” in Notepad. This will show everything in the folder including the hosts file.

All Files

Using your GreenGeeks server IP, add the following lines to the file on a new line at the bottom of the hosts file:

SERVER_IP_HERE ggexample.com
SERVER_IP_HERE www.ggexample.com

Server lines for testing site using hosts file

Note that SERVER_IP_HERE needs to be replaced with your actual server IP address. The ggexample.com references should be replaced with your actual domain name.

Here is an example of what your entry should look like:

13.57.24.68 ggexample.com
13.57.24.68 www.ggexample.com

DNS example for testing via hosts file

Go to File and Save the hosts file. You don’t want to use “Save As” because you’re keeping the hosts file as-is with your added redirect entry.

Save Hosts

Restart your web browser and navigate to your website. The site will now load from the GreenGeeks server.

Linux and macOS users

For Linux and macOS users, the location of the hosts file is:

/etc/hosts

You have to make changes to the hosts file as a superuser.

macOS

  • Click the F4 key to access launcher
  • Enter terminal in the search field
  • Click the Terminal icon

To open the hosts file with Nano as a superuser, use the following command:

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Since you are executing a command as a superuser, macOS will ask for the password for your Mac user account. Enter your password and click the ENTER key.

Add these lines to the bottom of the hosts file:

SERVER_IP_HERE ggexample.com
SERVER_IP_HERE www.ggexample.com

Replace SERVER_IP_HERE with your server IP address and replace ggexample.com with your domain name.

Your entry should look like:

12.34.56.78 ggexample.com
12.34.56.78 www.ggexample.com

When you are finished editing hosts file:

  • Click CTRL + X on your keyboard
  • Enter Y to save changes
  • Click the ENTER key

Linux

To edit with the Nano text editor, use the command:

$ sudo nano /etc/hosts

or to edit with the gedit text editor:

$ sudo gedit /etc/hosts

Add these lines to the bottom of the hosts file:

SERVER_IP_HERE ggexample.com
SERVER_IP_HERE www.ggexample.com

Replace SERVER_IP_HERE with your server IP address and replace ggexample.com with your domain name.

Your entry should look like:

12.34.56.78 ggexample.com
12.34.56.78 www.ggexample.com

Save the changes by clicking ctrl+X on your keyboard.

Removing the Redirect Entry

To revert this change, simply remove the lines you added and save the file again. This will direct the site back to the original host. You may need to do this before visiting your domain registrar to change the nameserver.

The content of your website determines the space requirements, of course, but that content goes beyond the usual HTML files, images, databases, etc. It also includes things we don’t always think about, like email accounts, access logs, and third-party programs or scripts you may have installed.

In the early days of commercial website hosting, a typical plan often provided around 25 megabytes of storage space. While that may seem hard to believe now, those early space limitations led a lot of us to be concerned with how much disk space our websites used.

Disk storage space isn’t usually an issue anymore since GreenGeeks and many other hosts offer accounts with unlimited storage space. But if you have the need to determine storage space requirements for your website, there are some things to consider.

Disk Space and Bandwidth

The first thing to remember is disk space and bandwidth are not the same things. Disk space is file storage space, and bandwidth is the amount of data that is transferred from your website to visitors. So when we talk about disk space, that number remains the same whether ten or ten thousand visitors access it.

Email, Logs, and Databases All Count

When calculating the disk space your account uses, you have to look beyond the /public_html directory where your uploaded website files live. If you make an FTP connection to your account and go up one level from /public_html, you’ll be in your home directory, and you can see there are a lot of things taking up space there. Application configuration files, logs, email – it all adds up. Your databases don’t live in your home directory, but their disk space usage also counts toward your overall storage usage.

Disk Space for Video and Audio

While it may tempting to load your latest album or feature-length video up to your “unlimited storage space” website, it’s almost always better to use a dedicated platform for those kinds of large downloads or streaming files. Not that your website isn’t capable of serving up those kinds of files, it is. But YouTube or Vimeo can serve your video more efficiently than any website host, and they make it easy to embed the videos on the website pages that are served from your host.

The same thing applies to audio, whether it’s music or a podcast. You certainly could serve the files directly from your website, but sites like Bandcamp or Soundcloud have great built-in players and infrastructures that can deal with that increase in demand when your single goes to number one. Podcasts can also present problems as a lot of users will automatically download new episodes as soon as they become available. A specialized podcast host like Libsyn or blubrry is ready for that kind of action, while a shared web server can strain under the pressure of hundreds or thousands of users downloading a large file at the same time.

Again, you certainly can host audio and video files on your GreenGeeks site. But if you expect (or hope) to serve large numbers of users all downloading at essentially the same time, a shared hosting platform may not be the ideal backbone for that. If you can offload media streaming to a specialized platform, your website will continue to perform great under the pressure of popularity and you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds.

Estimates Are Estimates

Finally, unless you already have an active website it’s difficult to estimate how much space you might need for the project you have planned. You’ll usually find that the need for storage space grows more rapidly than you’ve anticipated, so if you lock yourself into a limited storage space plan, make sure you have the option of increasing the amount of space available to you should the need arise.

A temporary URL is available on GreenGeeks Managed VPS Hosting. The method described here is not applicable to other GreenGeeks hosting accounts.

You can configure Drupal to use your GreenGeeks temporary URL which is useful for testing purposes and when moving a Drupal installation to GreenGeeks from another host. We’re going to edit two files to make the Drupal installation available on the temporary URL.

If you are comfortable using an FTP program and a text editor you can make these changes that way, but for this article, we’re going to make all the changes using cPanel.

Log in to cPanel

Log in to GreenGeeks and go to cPanel by clicking the “cPanel Login” button in the “Quick Server Login” section.

Open the File Manager

In the “FILES” section, click the “File Manager” link or icon.

Locate the Drupal Settings File

Navigate to the Drupal settings.php file. In this case, Drupal is installed in a directory named drupal, and the settings.php file can be found in  /sites/default.

Select the “settings.php” file and click “Edit.”

A file encoding popup will open. If your website uses English and standard characters, click the “Edit” button (if your site uses another language that does not use UTF-8 encoding, select the appropriate encoding and click the “Edit” button).

Make Your Temporary URL the Base URL in the Config File

Find the portion of the file that references the “Public file base URL.” Change this:

To this:

Click the “Save Changes” to complete the edit.

What we’ve done is removed the hash from the beginning of the line and replaced the example URL in the file with our GreenGeeks temporary URL. (Your temporary URL is the server IP address that can be found in your signup email followed by /~ and your account username. It looks like this: http://192.186.0.0/~ggexample/)

Edit the .htaccess file

By default the cPanel File Editor hides “dot” files, so to edit .htaccess, you must first configure the cPanel File Editor to display dot files.

In the File Manager, click the “Settings” button.

In the “Preferences popup window, check “Show Hidden Files” and click the “Save” button.

Open up the .htaccess file for editing in the same way you opened settings.php. Enter this line (replacing “cpanelusername” with your GreenGeeks cPanel username):

RewriteBase /~cpanelusername

Click the “Save Changes” button.

That’s All There Is to It

Your Drupal installation should now be accessible using your temporary URL.

Make sure that you undo these changes when you have finished testing or point your domain to GreenGeeks (to reverse the changes, just put a hash in front of the base URL line in settings.php and delete the line you added to .htaccess).

If our website migration team requires any additional information, they will request it via email. We will send you an email verification when we have completed the migration.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Do not change your name server or other DNS settings to our servers until your web site files and email have been moved to our servers by you or one of our representatives. Updating DNS prematurely will cause your web site to become unavailable and disrupt email service.
  • If we encounter slow download or upload speeds at your current web hosting provider, delays may result.

Location Migrations:
GreenGeeks offers several different physical locations to host your website.  Customers can request to have their existing account migrated to a new server location for a one-time $29.95 fee by opening a Support Ticket.

Migrating Infected Sites:
GreenGeeks is unable to scan your site for malware before you migrate to us. However, if you believe your site is compromised, we can scan your site for malware after your migration is complete upon request.

GreenGeeks includes 1 complimentary malware cleanup with each hosting account. For details please see our Cleanup Terms of Service.
